Griffin rider 22.12.09

This artwork is the final piece I made for a project concerning griffins. The method which I tested first with "Surprised old man" was again used, within Adobe Photoshop.

"Speedpainting"

Workflow
Sketch
The initial sketch is shown here, which is again done with pencil on paper.

Composition guides
The scanned sketch is divided into a foreground and a background layer, and some shading was done. Some composition guides were added too.

Adding detail
Some detail is added to the main character, and lightning bolts are added in a separate layer. Everything is again done with the dodge and burn tools.

Initial colouring
Basic colours are applied to get some general idea on the final result. Again the colors are put in separate layers with the colour blend mode; one for the background, one fore the foreground, to avoid color mixing at the object boundaries.

Highlighting
Highlighting of the main character is done, and a misty effect is added in a separate quite transparent layer.

Reflections
The blue colour of the lightning is added, together with reflections on the clouds, the griffin and the person. Even more detail is added to the griffin's wings.

More reflections
More reflections are added.

Mist
I redrew the mist layer, and highlights are added in the clouds at the top of the lightning bolts.

Extra characters + tone adjustment
The overall tone is adapted, and two extra characters are added to the scene in the background, together with three griffins above the mountains.

Finalisation
The added characters are finalised with more detail and reflections.

Canvas print
The final piece was printed on a 60x80 cm canvas.
